Pregnancy and postnatal

Pregnancy and motherhood can be a hard enough time as it is, without having to worry about what is going on with your own body. As such, we tend to ignore our own needs for the focus of the baby, whether unborn, newborn, or older. I am a firm believer that the mother is the cornerstone of a family unit, and, if we don't look after ourselves, how can we be expected to look after everyone else? As they say...

You can't give from an empty cup!

So I am here, to give you, the mum, what you need. From the early stages of pregnancy, when perhaps you're suffering with morning sickness, tiredness, or even joint discomfort as those early hormones kick in... to the late stages of pregnancy when you're feeling uncomfortable, and you need to prepare for birth...right through to the postnatal period (be it immediately postnatal or 10...20 years later). There's something I can offer you!

Massage

Treatments are focused and tailored for the individual, to relieve pain and promote recovery in a nurturing, holistic way, using a range of advanced techniques. I am highly qualified and experienced to help ladies in their pregnancy journey, and also to aid recovery pregnant-775036_1920following birth.

Furthermore, I am an Advanced Personal Trainer, specialising in the pre- and postnatal fitness, and hold an advanced certificate in postnatal core restore and functional exercise programming.

For ladies suffering with post birth problems such as diastasis recti, stress incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction, or c-section scar discomfort, soft tissue release FOLLOWED by correct, safe, appropriate exercise prescription is KEY for recovery and to being pain free. Receiving treatment with BodyResults, you can be sure you will be treated for the route of the pain, not just the symptoms.

Postnatal courses and workshops

Having had two children myself, I was shocked and saddened to realise how little information and support there is for women who have given birth. The focus is largely on the new baby, and the new mum is usually just left to get on with things. As women embarking on pregnancy and motherhood, there is little discussion about what your body has to go through, and how it may take time to recover.

As a fit and healthy individual, and having experienced a text-book and beautiful water birth, I was convinced after my first pregnancy, that I would bounce back. And on the outside I did, other than a small diastasis (tummy separation) that I thought a few ab exercises would fix. But I wasn't aware of the potential for things to not be quite right with my body, even though I felt great, and I wasn't aware of the damage that could be done by immersing myself in bootcamp-style classes as soon as I'd had the 'sign off' from my GP. It wasn't long before I realised that things weren't quite right as I began leaking urine while doing certain exercises. I then developed a pelvic organ prolapse (where pelvic organs- bladder, bowel and/or uterus can protrude from your vagina) and umbilical hernia (where parts of the insides of your abdomen- intestines or fatty tissue- protrude through a weakened area of the abdominal wall).

Since then I have immersed myself in education around women's health, and surrounded myself with the best people in the field of women's health, such as women's health physios. I am passionate about educating people on the issues surrounding postnatal recovery. I have since launched my passion- the BodyResults Motherhood Postnatal Recovery Core Rebuild course, to ensure women are given the best care and information to help them safely and effectively recover following pregnancy and birth.

Here's an interview I recently did with a fellow massage therapist who specialises in women's health. We talk about the importance of getting seen by a women's health physio even if you don't have symptoms, taking a multi-pronged approach to recovery, and the importance of taking your recovery as your own, individual journey:

I have other exciting workshops planned for 2019; if you want to be the first to hear about these and receive early bird discounts, please do subscribe to the mailing list now !

Why would I opt for the Basic Plus, or Total Access?

These options include an assessment from a highly specialised Women's Health Physio, and/or a clinical massage session with myself. But why would you want these?

A Women's Health Physio is specifically trained to assess your postnatal body. She will give you a full assessment, from top to toe, including your pelvic floor muscles. It is only really through having an internal assessment that you can be fully sure what is going on with your internal muscles, and whether you are in fact doing your pelvic floor exercises correctly. She will be able to tell whether you are using your muscles correctly, whether they are weak, or indeed whether they are too tight. She will feed back to me her findings, which will then influence my programming for your personal situation. I believe that every woman should be assessed by a women's health physio following birth, and am so passionate about this, that I offer as part of a package, an initial assessment with one of a couple of excellent physios, at reduced cost...and I cover the discount out of my own pocket!

Clinical massage is an often overlooked part of a recovery programme, but can play an incredibly important role. Following pregnancy, our bodies often contain areas of restriction that can inhibit our healing potential. To get the most benefit from any rehab programme we must release stuck tissue, ideally before strengthening. Scar tissue can also play a massive role in postnatal dysfunction. In addition to my clinical massage techniques, I am qualified in a highly effective, yet incredibly gently ScarWork technique, which aims to reintegrate the scar tissue with the rest of the body. To find out more about postnatal massage and ScarWork, please take a look at my blogs on these topics!
